Affected by the India-Pakistan border conflict, Indian cotton exports to Pakistan have been blocked in recent days. However, Indian cotton exports to China have increased significantly. India revealed that China has signed 500000 bales of Indian cotton for shipment in the next two months.
The Indian Cotton Association said import demand from Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, Indonesia and many other regions was active, although trade in cotton between India and Pakistan could be temporarily suspended in the coming months. In recent weeks, India has signed up to export about 40-500000 bales of cotton to China for March-April. Indian cotton demand was very good at 78 cents and 79 cents in China. By February, India had exported about 3.2 million bales of cotton. So far, 650000 bales of cotton have been exported to Pakistan this year, accounting for 10% of the export volume. Originally, traders expected to continue to export 40-500000 bales of cotton to Pakistan in the future. But recent military clashes have blocked exports to Pakistan.
Recently, polyester feedstock market was in downward correction, and sales ratio of PFY has been slanting low for a week, resulting into mounting inventory. But the news that the VAT will be revised down from 16% to 13% from Apr 1 heated up the whole polyester market during last Friday. Namely, if PFY plants purchase feedstock in Mar and deduct it in Apr, the input tax will add by 3% to deduct VAT. Therefore, it is more cost effective to purchase feedstock in Mar theoretically if PFY price keeps stable.
Driven by this, downstream plants intensively restocked last Friday, pushing sales ratio of PFY up to 160%. This round of replenishment was mainly from enterprises that had low inventory at hand as worry on rising price stimulated them to procure.
Moderate purchase has appeared for several times if cooperated with bullish news since the second half of 2017. Once bullish news from macro side or polyester feedstock market emerged, PFY plants would witness sound sales, while downstream players were forced to purchase passively.
Pakistan's cotton production this year was 10.471 million bales, down 6.80 percent from the same period last year, due to reducing planting areas and adverse effects such as the use of inferior seeds and pesticides.
